While this time of year is typically full of holiday cheer and time spent with family and friends, that is not always the case for military families. Some of you are preparing to keep the season as cheerful as possible while spending a holiday apart. This time of year highlights how important it is to recognize the spouses and children of service members. The White House’s “Strengthening Our Military Families” initiative does exactly that, and aims to improve the lives of military families by making it easier for military spouses and children to have access to important resources, including employment and education. Take a look at how the Administration is assisting military families take advantage of these benefits:
- Employment – This month, an additional 60 companies partnered with the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) to provide more employment opportunities for military spouses. Betty Welsh, wife of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, explained, “Thanks to MSEP’s efforts, these companies now understand and are hiring from the most savvy, caring, dependable, well-educated group of people you can -- a military spouse.” The companies are committing to keeping these spouses employed, regardless of whether he or she has to move because of their spouse’s military service.
- Education – President Obama signed an Executive Order called “Establishing Principles of Excellence for Educational Institutions Serving Service Members, Veterans, Spouses, and Other Family Members.” The Order is meant to ensure that military families have the information they need to make informed decisions concerning their Federal military and veterans educational benefits. It includes protections from Post-9/11 GI Bill scams that affect many of our veterans.
Preparing for a transition in employment or education can be difficult without help. The following links are great resources for those who need more information about military benefits or loans, and will help make these transitions much easier for our committed military families.
