Memorial Day 2016

Honoring The Fallen

Memorial-DAyFor most people, Memorial Day serves as the official kickoff of summer, with backyard barbecues, the opening of pools, and maybe even a parade serving as centerpieces of the extended weekend.

In reality, the day is set aside for us to remember all of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Their selfless actions on the fields of battle have been part of what makes our country great, and we respectfully honor all those who have served our nation—from the Revolutionary War, through our decades-long conflict against terrorism.

So this year, take some time to honor the true meaning of the holiday by paying respect at a local veteran cemetery. While there is not one in every state, the Veterans Administration has a list of official locations, and most have something going on this weekend, whether simply placing of flags on graves or more elaborate ceremonies.

No matter how you celebrate the day, make sure to take some time out to remember those who have served, and join us in honoring them for their patriotism, dedication, and service.
