2016 Military Pay Chart

With the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), President Obama and Congress authorized a 1.3% raise in basic pay for most service members, effective January 1, 2016. Generals and Flag Officers above pay grade O-7 are excluded due to a pay freeze. This year’s pay raise is the biggest the military has seen in three years.

Each year, the military’s annual pay increase is determined in part by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which looks at growth in private-sector wages and provides a recommendation to the president. The president then works that recommendation into his defense budget, which must then be signed into law through Congress.

Whether your pay grade is E-1 or O-10, the 2016 military pay charts make it simple and easy to understand your compensation. Pay rates indicate total monthly compensation for active duty and reservists in the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard. Pay and allowances are distributed on the 1st and 15th day of the month. If either day falls on a weekend or national holiday, compensation occurs on the following workday.

If you expect to collect specific incentives, allowances or special kinds of pay, the charts will help you accurately calculate your monthly income. You'll find all the information you need for the following types of military pay:

  • Basic Pay
  • Drill Pay
  • Allowances, including Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) and Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)
  • Incentive Pay, including Submarine Duty, Hazardous Duty and Imminent Danger
  • Special Pay
  • Career Sea Pay
