Military Appreciation Month 2018

How We’re Honoring Our Military

In 1999, senators John McCain and Duncan Hunter championed a movement to reserve an entire month for honoring and celebrating our country’s military families. A more comprehensive resolution was introduced to Congress later by Tom Davis, and in 2004, H.Con.Res 328 passed with flying colors to create National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM).

Now, every May, we take time to stop and show our support and gratitude for not only active-duty service members, but all members of the National Guard and Reserves, veterans, and their families. The month is sprinkled with holidays and activities, from Loyalty Day on the 1st to Military Spouse Appreciation Day on the 11th, to Memorial Day on the 28th.

It’s important that we all take time out to acknowledge the sacrifices that military families make for our country – from the men and women deployed all over the world, to the spouses, their kids, and all veterans at home. Thank you for everything you do to protect and serve our country.

PIONEER’S ROLE

It’s easy to say thanks, but actions speak louder than words. Here’s what we’re doing this year to celebrate NMAM:

  • Thank You Letter CampaignA Million Thanks is a nonprofit that collects hand-written letters and sends them to deployed service members. We’re partnering with them to collect as many letters as we can. We also have local offices in select cities near major military installations that serve as official drop-off locations. A letter is a great way to show your appreciation to military personnel across the world.
  • Community Support – Speaking of our local offices, we’re always looking to get involved in community gatherings and event sponsorships. We’ll be handing out free lunches, t-shirts, and other swag at various community events throughout the month of May. Like us on Facebook to keep track of all the action.
  • Military Spouse Educational Scholarships – We’re teaming up with the National Military Family Association (NMFA) to provide scholarships to military spouses for career development and education. We’ll have more information in the coming weeks, so check back soon for updates!
  • Memorial Day Celebration – We’re headquartered in Kansas City, MO, and the National World War I Museum is an iconic part of our city’s skyline and our local community. We’re currently looking to partner with the museum to do something special for military families in the area. We’ll have more details to share as we get closer to Memorial Day.

These are just a few of the ways we’re showing our appreciation throughout the month. We hope you’ll look for similar opportunities in your city to thank and celebrate our country’s military families. From all of us at Pioneer Services, happy Military Appreciation Month!
